There are plenty of offers of jewelry that has artificial diamonds instead of real diamonds. This may cause you to wonder if you are being ripped off, and what the differences are between real diamonds and artificial ones.
Real diamonds are mined, whereas artificial diamonds are made in a lab. Natural Flaws within a Diamond

Many natural flaws can be discovered inside the formation of a diamond under the inspection process, these precious gemstones are considered imperfect. Most diamond flaws that occur during the formation of the diamond naturally are not visible to the naked eye and will rarely hinder its market value. The natural flaws that are found in diamonds are actually the inclusions of trace minerals and composites that were present in the area during the time of the natural formation process of the precious gemstone millions of years ago.

These minor inclusions can on occasion, cause the diamond it have a dull appearance or slight discoloration. A common diamond flaw, a tiny crack, will affect the stones clarity. As light passes through the stone, it is interrupted by the distorted reflection. More noticeable diamond flaws are inclusions of a mineral composite, creating a discoloration in the overall look. Rarely, is a diamond graded as “no flaw” and, to find one on the market would be an even rarer find.

Small natural flaws in a diamond will rarely affect the value of the diamond. On the other hand, diamond flaws that are large enough can cause a weakness in the gemstone itself. These larger than normal infractions and over sized inclusions may cause the precious stone to shatter or break under normal wear. Flaws of this nature, you need to be aware of since they do reduce the value of your gemstone. Diamond Pinpoint Inclusion Flaws

A diamond that appears to have dark speckles, which resemble dirt clusters displaced throughout the gemstone, it is considered to have a natural diamond flaw called a pinpoint inclusion. If the dirt cluster like crystals are too dense to the naked eye and resembles a cloud, the clarity of the diamond will be affected when the diamond is graded by a gemologist or jeweler. Diamond Imperfections caused by Laser Treatments

When a jeweler finds an imperfect diamond possessing cloud like crystal flaws he may choose to perform a laser treatment on the diamond, provided the diamond is feasibly large enough to maintain the market values. Laser treatments are often used on imperfections to increase the diamonds appeal and to either gain or maintain market value for the precious stone. Laser treatments are visible from the outer edge of the diamond and works inward to the discoloration area of the diamond cut. The laser performs a bleaching effect on the area that is discolored. After treatment is completed, a glass like substance may be used to fill in the space created by the laser. Diamond Flaws caused by Mineral and Crystal Inclusions

Not all diamond imperfections have a negative impact on its market value. Diamonds can also create eye catching and pleasing flaws within its character. Minerals that were trapped during the natural processes of the diamond formation can cause imperfections. These various minerals or crystals can give the diamond a hue of yellow to brown, green, and pink, or blue like in the case of the infamous Hope Diamond.

In rare instances, another precious gemstone can be found inside the diamond, and is not seen or graded as an imperfection flaw. Diamonds have been recovered that had another valuable carbon based gemstone embedded inside of the diamond. In which case, the diamond would take on an extremely rare characteristic and would be graded highly by the jeweler in respect to market value.

Without a doubt, diamonds are among the most exquisite stones in existence. This is mainly due to the colorless appearance, which is a combination of the diamond characteristics: cut, clarity, color, and carat. For years these core characteristics have help describe the beauty of a diamond.

The cut of a diamond is always the first to be considered—as it is considered as the most important of the characteristics. This is because the cut usually determines the value. For instance, a big or heavy diamond isn’t always valuable if the cut is poor. Although many refer to the shape of the stone as its cut, this term actually refers to the reflective qualities of a diamond. In layman’s terms, the cut determines the diamond’s ability to handle the light passing through the stone. The light that passes through the diamond should reflect back to the eye; with poorly cut diamonds, the light leaks out.

Meanwhile, the clarity of the diamond allows one to see the flaws of the stone. Clarity is rated from F (flawless) to I1 to I3 (the lowest of the grades). Experts do not suggest buyers get diamond with the last three ratings, as diamonds with these ratings have visible internal flaws (meaning the diamond is obviously of poor quality). Needless to say, buyers should opt for colorless diamonds, since this also means it is clear. The highest grade of diamonds is colorless. Next to colorless on the color scale is near colorless, faint fellow, and very light yellow. Diamonds with a light yellow color are of low quality.

The final characteristic is the carat, or the weight of the stone. A carat is 200 milligrams, although bigger doesn’t always mean more valuable. Good diamonds should always strike a balance between all four characteristics.

Diamond engagement rings profess a message of love and fidelity that no other form of ring ever could.  It is not that such rings are novel, since diamonds and gold have been the standard raw materials for engagement rings for many years, but there is now a much wider range of colors and designs available.The hip hop music scene, and the bling that has arisen from it, have given rise to a style that is unmistakenly brash, but also beautiful at the same time.  The style is typified by masses of diamonds which give rise to the term iced up’, which in turn gave rise to a brand new style of jewelry where, rather than solitaires set in classical settings, jewelry pieces are composed of masses of small round and princess cut diamonds, sometimes invisibly set, to give the appearance of the dazzling beauty of masses and masses of diamonds.  The round cut diamonds in particular offer more sparkle for the buck than most other diamond cuts, so that just a few diamonds intelligently set, can offer the sparkling appearance of many more, and are absolutely ideal for the bling style, whether used in rings or any other form of jewelry. Diamond engagement rings are also available in such bling styles, as well as in the more traditional form of engagement ring. A typical example of the latter is a solitaire diamond of just over a carat within a four-prong setting, with round cut diamonds and baguettes to another carat or so on either side, all set in a 14 carat gold ring.  You can also get engagement rings in 18 carat gold, but the higher the carats the purer and hence softer the gold.  Keep in mind that this ring should last a lifetime, so the harder wearing 14 carat is a good compromise between the cheaper 9 carat and the softer 18 carat.  In the alternative bling style you can have 1.5 carats of diamonds round cut and invisibly set in 14 K yellow gold.  This is serious sparkle, and it will out-glitter most other diamond engagement rings around.  Be careful that the guy’s ring doesn’t outshine his fiancée’s or he will be in deep trouble!Although people may claim that they buy a particular diamond engagement ring for a number of different reasons, effectively it comes down to just three basic ones.  The first of these is, of course, simply to give to their fiancée to signify the engagement. This is traditional in the Western world, and also now in most other countries in the world.   If this were the only reason, then one might presume that any ring would do, so the second reason is to buy the best that they can, particular of the man for the woman. The subconscious, and likely traditional, reason for that is likely that the value of the ring signifies the worth of the potential bridegroom and his ability to look after his wife. Some have suggested that the traditional diamond engagement ring is waning in popularity, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Diamond rings are every bit as popular as they have ever been, and in many ways they have grown in popularity.  It is perhaps largely due to the increased availability and range of styles that a diamond ring has to offer, and also to the revived status that diamond jewelry of any kind has been enjoying.   It could also be that young people have more money to spend than a decade or two ago.  Whatever the reason, an increasing number of couples are spending more and more money on diamond engagement rings of all kinds.  Some contain other stones, such as emeralds, sapphires or rubies, while others consist of white diamonds mixed with diamonds of other colors, some enhanced to make them more vivid. White gold, pink gold, yellow gold and platinum are among the more popular metal options available. Nothing expresses the impression of style and elegance of a diamond ring and a ring on that left hand’s third finger indicates more than just that the woman or man wearing it is spoken for.  It indicates the commitment to eternity that diamonds signify, and a signal of everlasting love. There will always be discussion over why a particular ring was chosen, but diamond and gold have become traditional materials for engagement rings, and so in the final analysis, there would likely be little choice:  the man either purchases the selected ring himself to present to his girl, and spends what he thinks necessary to impress her, or the girl chooses her own, and selects a ring that that she thinks looks good on her finger. The two choices of diamond engagement rings are unlikely to be the same!

(The 4C’s revisited)

Information about diamond classification (the 4 C’s) is available on almost every  jewelry associated web site, but it shares a common shortcoming – the information is rather technical  In this article I will focus on different aspects of the 4C’s that are not usually mentioned and try to give you information that will help you choose right and buy wise.

The 4 C’s mentioned above stand for: Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut

Carat- This is the weight, and not the size of the diamond. The two are very much connected but often customers do not realize that they are paying for the weight but are wearing the size and appearance. A diamond’s weight is measured in what is known as a ‘carat’, which is a small unit of measurement equal to 0.2 grams. Carat is not a measure of a diamond’s size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions can affect its weight. Below is a diagram that shows the relative size of various carat weights in a diamond that is cut to the same proportions. Unproportionaly cut stones can ad a lot of weight and damage the appearance of a diamond. The usual reason for unproportional cut is to retain as much weight as possible (remember-you are paying for weight) Diamond like this must be sold with considerable discount. My personal opinion is to avoid such stones.How do we know the stone is cut for weight? Look at the report that must come with the diamond certificate. If the cut is rated ideal, excellent or very good then there is no problem. Anything under this, need proper examination. Look at the paragraph “girdle “. This is the place where most weight is usually added. Sometime up to 20%.Girdle must be described as thin or medium. The most important thing to remember when it comes to a diamond’s carat weight is that it is not the only factor that determines a diamond’s value. In other words, bigger does not necessarily mean better.

Color- Diamonds are found in nature in a wide range of colors, from completely colorless (the most desirable trait) to slightly yellow, to brown. So-called ‘fancy color diamonds’ come in more intense colors, like yellow, blue, green and pink, but these are not graded on the same scale. The best color for diamond is the lack of it. Color is an important quality but it is a bit overrated for non investment stones. Color is graded with the letters of the alphabet from D (ABC is skipped) being the whitest or more precise the most colorless to Z being rather yellowish. On the GIA grading scale below, D-F are considered colorless, G-I near colorless and any grade J or below shows an increasingly yellowish tinge. Beyond the preference for a whiter stone, however, the color of a diamond does not affect its brightness or sparkle. The color of a diamond is best observed when the stone is placed table down on a piece of pure white paper and viewed trough the pavilion.  The difference between two neighboring colors is completely undetectable for non specialist. Stones up to I and even J are perceived as white if there is no whiter stone next to them to compare. Color is a natural property of the diamond and although it greatly affects the price it should not be considered a shortcoming. The whiteness of the diamond is more important in case of pave set melee (smalls) where they must blend with the white metal around them. My advice is: for diamonds from 0.1ct. to under 1 ct go for colors F,G or H. Beautiful stones, great value for money. If you consider buying bigger investment diamonds go to chapter

Clarity is defining the existence (or lack of it) of natural inclusions or fractures in the diamond visible to a specialist by 10X magnification. Again, important for investment stones and not so for every-day-ring stone. Clarity refers to the number, position and size of the inclusions that occur naturally inside diamonds. The fewer and less obvious the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond. The usual diamond grading information boards used widely by retailers to explain the 4C’s to customers does not show the actual  size and visibility of the different grade inclusions. They are, to say it mild, a bit misleading. The only way for a non specialist to see and assess the clarity is in the real diamond. Inclusions up to VS2 are not visible for non specialist under 10 x magnifications. Inclusions up to SI2 are not visible by naked eye. Inclusions up to SI2 and in most cases SI3 do not affect the overall appearance of the stone. My advice is: for non investment stones go for VS1 to SI1 or even SI2. Often the inclusion is a small dot or fracture on the periphery completely concealable by the setting.

Cut-This is not the shape but rather the proportions symmetry and the quality of finish of the diamond. May be because it is not mentioned on the main body of the certificate the cut is often overlooked. It is though, the most important C. It defines the quality of human intervention on shaping the rough stone to a spectacular brilliant jewel. It can make, on the other hand a piece of fantastic rough material look dull and lifeless. It is not necessary to learn the ideal proportions. You have two definite guidelines. First is the proportion report I mentioned earlier, that must accompany every diamond certificate .It is usually printed on a sticker label and pocketed inside the cover. The report must say the proportions are very good, excellent or ideal. The second is your eye. Always ask for few diamonds to compare. If you think that the non reflective dull spot in the middle of the stone will brighten up after it is set in your ring, you are wrong. The well cut diamond will reflect light right from the center, and not only from the periphery. You can also use a simple test if the diamond is not set. Draw a short line with a black pen on white piece of paper. Put the diamond next to the line lying on its table (the flat top facet). Now, holding it for the griddle with your fingers or better with a pair of tweezers slide it over the line looking trough the pointy pavilion. If you see the line trough the stone then there is a problem with its proportions or it is not a diamond. With properly proportioned diamond one should not be able to see any trace of the line passing trough the pavilion while sliding it over. While color and clarity are big factors in the cost of a diamond, it is the Cut that breathes life, beauty and dazzling brilliance into a diamond.

Other diamond properties are: brilliance, dispersion, scintillation and fluorescence. They are properties discussed in more profound diamond study and do not fit the scope of this article.

Now, in a nut shell:

Try to find balance between the 4C’s that suite your budgetConcentrate on qualities that count most. In order of importance they are:

Cut

Color/Carat

Clarity

If you have a budget,(which applies to the most cases) you better spend on color or size instead on invisible clarity, especially higher than VS1. I would like to stipulate again that my advises in this article does not apply for investment diamonds bought with intention to sell for profit.Do not compromise the cut for bargain price. Always look at more than one stone. Compare similar size stones with different color and clarity and try to see the difference. If you don’t see it in close look most likely nobody else will. Then buy the cheaper one. Always relay on what you see rather on what you are told or what you read. The diamond is a feast for the eye and seeing it is the only way to appreciate it. Remember: the certificate does not determine the beauty of your diamond.“The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Buying a diamond ring seems to be pretty simple but it’s actually not. In addition to the designs, you also have to take into account a variety of things that will determine the cost of the piece of jewelry.
Below are some of the factors that you have to consider in buying a diamond ring that will really fit you.
1. Clarity
Clarity refers to the clearness of the stone. This means that the stone must not be hazy in appearance. When seen under the lens, there should be no flaws or imperfections in the form of spots. This is important as the number of flaws will determine the level that the diamond will be in. The higher the clarity, the more expensive the diamond will be.
2. Color
Although diamonds are basically clear in its color, colorless in short, there are some that carry shades of yellow. This is because of the way the diamond developed in the mining field. 3. Cut
Although this is actually not so much a determinant of price, people still include this in their list of considerations because this will determine the brilliance of the diamond. The cut does not only refer to the shape of the stone but also to the number of cuts that make up its facets. The princess cut for instance can have as much as 57 facets. Other kinds of cuts are the marquise, the emerald, the pear, the oval and the round.
4. Carat
The carat, as most know, refers to the weight of the diamond. The bigger and heavier the diamond is, the more expensive it is. Stores will have a calculation of how heavy the individuals stones and also a calculation of the total weight. If there are colored stones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds, it is also good to ask for their equivalent weight.
5. Setting
In buying a diamond ring, you also have to choose the kind of setting that you want. There are actually a lot of metals that you can choose from. There is the gold, both white and yellow, that is still the choice of most people. There is also the titanium, the silver and the platinum, which is fast becoming a popular commodity in the country when it comes to rings.

Unless you intend to marry like Elizabeth Taylor, you only get to wear a wedding dress once in your life. Of course, if by chance or choice you do get married again and again, you would have many wedding dresses! (Don’t even think about recycling your old wedding dress. You might be saving on costs but you are not doing yourself any favors)
